Stroud is steeped in historic building and places.  Founded in 1826 by the Australian Agricultural Company, Stroud is the nation’s oldest surviving company town. A gated community in early times, it still has at its heart four significant buildings erected by  the company to form the educational, social and religious hub. They remain today as a living, working memorial to the convict and free settlers who built Stroud and helped found corporate agriculture in Australia.

Grouped together on the Register of the National Estate, they are St John’s Church, built in 1833 as the AA Company Chapel;  Quambi, also dating from the 1830s, built as a school and headmaster’s residence and now the museum of Stroud Historical Society; the rectory, largely rebuilt after a fire in 1856; and the parish hall, built as an annex to the village school in the 1850s.

The local Historical Society is actively involved in protecting these important links to the past.

Some building are privately owned, and some are public buildings that can be viewed by arrangement and for group tours.

Quambi House also functions as a local museum, and is open Wednesdays and Sundays.
